January Holiday Shopping – 2023 Calendar With Holidays For eCommerce
Retail calendar – main holiday sales in January: New Year’s Day and Australia Day.
1st January – New Year’s Day
Target audience: everyone
New Year’s Day promotion can be a great end of the year or a wonderful beginning. Your marketing campaign should be mainly focused on New Year’s goals, bucket lists, and even some challenges that might be included throughout the first week of the new year. All the New Year’s attributes and decorations are sold during this period.
2nd January – Science Fiction Day
Target audience: Fans of the Sci-Fi genre, books, movies, games, and comics all over the world.
It doesn’t matter if you like or dislike sci-fi films, books, or game franchises, but Marvel, Harry Potter, Spiderman, X-man, and Star Wars have a huge % of fans who are fond of them! Just look at the random data: with a total value of over $68 billion, “Star Wars” is the fifth-highest-grossing media franchise of all time. So, if your dropshipping store is somehow related to the sci-fi world – go ahead and promote it!
6th January – National Shortbread Day
Target audience: Scottish people, baking fans, sweets lovers, people who are interested in diet (you can share, for example, a gluten-free recipe)
First celebrated in America, National Shortbread Day on January 6 recognizes a classic Scottish treat known as shortbread. It has become a food holiday worth celebrating across the US, UK, and around the world.
Shortbread is a traditional Scottish dessert prepared often during the 12th century. A version similar to what we have today is credited to Mary, Queen of Scotland in the 16th century, who invented modern shortbread by adding sugar to an existing recipe. As it was expensive to make, the sweet cookie was a luxury dessert for special occasions. Nowadays, shortbread is a highly commercialized food sold in tartan boxes throughout the world.
Most people celebrate National Shortbread Day by treating themselves to some traditional shortbread and exploring the different versions of it.
13th January – National Sticker Day
Target audience: artsy people, families with kids, content creators
I don’t know what must happen to make the stickers disappear from our reality or become boring or unnecessary☺ Every sticker means fun! They are so cool they deserve a day to celebrate and promote it if your store is about fun, youth, and creativity. This is a day to put stickers everywhere! Also, you might consider it interesting to celebrate if your store direction is souvenir production: you can easily get them custom printed.
15th January – National Hat Day
Target audience: healthiness fashionistas, travelers
On this day, people wear their favorite hats (obviously), make fun by wearing hats like “toques” (white hats worn by chefs), and even host hat-themed parties. It is a perfect possibility to boost your holiday sales by selling all kinds of headgear – not just usual hats but also baseball caps, cowboy hats, fascinators, and so on.
National Hat Day is an excellent chance to start promoting headwear in your business or to introduce new designs for known products. Especially if you have a clothing eCommerce store. Add this date to your retail calendar if you sell clothing.
16th January – Martin Luther King Jr Day
Target audience: People who are interested in politics, minorities of any kind (the message of being a minority is universal)
The day honors the life and work of Dr. King, a prominent leader in the American civil rights movement who dedicated his life to achieving equality for people of all colors. Martin Luther King Jr Day is observed annually on the third Monday in January, near Dr. King’s birthday on January 15.
Martin Luther King Jr Day not only honors the life and work of Dr. King but encourages people to reflect on the principles of racial equality and to volunteer to improve their communities. The day is celebrated with events like marches and rallies, and speeches by politicians and civil rights leaders.
16th January – Blue Monday
Target audience: this topic can fit almost anyone, universally
Around 15 years ago, a psychologist at Cardiff University was creating a formula to uncover when people are most likely to book a holiday. They concluded that the gloomier they felt, the more likely they were to book a flight to somewhere sunny. Brands all over the world target Blue Monday for their social media and marketing campaigns, in an attempt to spread some joy during the post-Christmas lull. Join them and give your customers some discounts! Don’t Be Blue, We Got You!
19th January – Get to Know Your Customers Day
Target audience: this topic can fit almost anyone, universally
Observed every year on the third Thursday of each quarter (January, April, July, and October), Get to Know Your Customers Day reminds businesses to understand the needs and opinions of their customer base.
While the origin of this shopping holiday is unknown, the significance of its purpose is quite obvious. Businesses that provide excellent customer service thrive, and their customers are loyal to them. Bad customer experiences lead to loss of sales, damage brand image, and turn your customers over to competitors.
Use this opportunity to show that you value your customers and improve your brand reputation. Encourage feedback in exchange for rewards, make a giveaway, and celebrate with special offers or discounts.
22nd January – Chinese New Year (the year of the Rabbit)
Target audience: the East Asian and Southeast Asian communities, people around the world who follow the Chinese zodiac
One of the 12 traditional zodiac animals is attributed to each year. 2023 is the year of the Rabbit, so take it into consideration while choosing your marketing strategies. Some other things which are also popular this time are tea, candies, clothes and hats, and toys.
Prepare your eCommerce store for the Chinese New Year. Stack your inventory red or start adding red-colored products in your inventory as it’s the most significant color of the holiday. Never gift anything in black or white. These two colors are often related to funerals and thus might cause discontentment in the mind of your host.
23rd January – National Pie Day
Target audience: food fans, baking fans, sweets fans, sports fans (because of the pie-eating contests)
The non-profit organization called the American Pie Council (really?!) preserves the American pie-loving tradition via hobbies and commerce. It’s an opportunity to prepare some tasty pie recipes and designs for your foodie audience and anyone who enjoys a tasty pie. Yummy time indeed!
If you’re a local business, that’s your chance to find the nearest pie-eating competition or attract customers by hosting one yourself.
24th January – National Compliment Day
Target audience: everyone
Created in 1998 by Kathy Chamberlin and Debby Hoffyman, National Compliment Day is all about positivity and making someone’s day a bit brighter. The idea of National Compliment Day is to remind people that compliments are easy ways to connect positively with others, making people happier and putting a smile on their faces.
Just say thank you to your great customers and offer them something that transmits positive vibes.
26th January – Australia Day
Target audience: Australian
If your store is offering something for BBQs, fireworks, or performances – you should definitely take part in it and mark this day on your holiday shopping calendar. Add this date to your retail calendar if you sell in Australia.
26th January – National Spouse’s Day
Target audience: couples
National Spouse’s Day is another national holiday that encourages spouses to show their love for one another by gifting flowers, presents, and precious time. Market your items as holiday gifts to remind your consumers that this is a great day to surprise their loved ones.
27th January – Chocolate Cake Day
Target audience: chocolate and cakes lovers
Until America’s 1830s, chocolate was consumed primarily as a beverage. Chocolate cakes, as we know them nowadays, did not exist until then. The earliest chocolate cake recipe was published in 1847 by Eliza Leslie, a popular Philadelphia cookbook author. Unlike the recipes we know today, this one used chopped chocolate.
Throughout the late twentieth century, chocolate cake became a part of the culture, and by the 1920s, it had become mainstream. National Chocolate Cake Day was created as an opportunity for chocolate and cake lovers to pay homage to this great invention.

Retail calendar – main holiday sales in February: Galentine’s Day and Valentine’s Day.
1st – 28th February – LGBT History Month
Target audience: LGBTQ+ community and its supporters
My recommendation is to think carefully before starting a campaign as consumers can easily distinguish between brands that are authentic partners in the fight for equality versus ones that are just trying to make a quick buck. If you are a PRO – make it clear that your support of the LGBTQ+ community is not limited to one month or done as a means of commercialization. Commit to being a part of the movement, not a moment.
1st – 28th February – Black History Month
Target audience: people around the world
Black History Month, also called African American History Month, takes place each February in the US since 1976. It honors African American history, contributions, sacrifices, and achievements that helped shape the nation.
Black History Month started as Negro History Week in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, the president of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), to promote and educate people about Black history and culture. Every year has a new theme designated by ASALH – the practice established by Woodson for Negro History Week. The 2022 Black History Month’s theme was Black Health and Wellness. The 2023 theme is Black Resistance which explores how African Americans have resisted all forms of historical and ongoing oppression.

Target audience: animal lovers, nature lovers, travelers, and of course people from Pennsylvania and the areas near it that actually observe this holiday
Each year on February 2, people in the US flock to Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to await the forecast from the groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil. Each year, a groundhog rises from his burrow and checks for his shadow to predict if there will be six more weeks of winter.
The tradition originates from the 1700s when German settlers came to Pennsylvania and brought their seasonal beliefs with them. The legend says that if Phil sees his shadow on Groundhog Day, then winter will continue. If not, you can expect warmer temperatures and early spring.

5th February – World Nutella Day
Target audience: sweet tooth
Back in the early 1800s, there was a shortage of cocoa supplies in Turin, Italy. To stretch the chocolate, a chocolatier added ground hazelnuts. The resulting product was so good that the treat started selling in large blocks, called pasta Gianduja. The Nutella we know today appeared as the creamy version of Gianduja in 1964 and has become a delightfully popular treat throughout Europe.
World Nutella Day was started in 2007 by Sara Rosso, an American blogger who was living in Italy at the time. The fans of Nutella embraced the idea and started celebrating the day on social media around the world. In 2015, Sara Rosso transferred World Nutella Day to Ferrero, the company that makes Nutella. Each year since then, Ferrero picks one Nutella fan to lead the celebration. On February 5, Nutella fans share post pictures and recipes, and messages showing love and loyalty to their favorite hazelnut spread.
